Changing Fortunes: Global Energy |
|

Speech given by Peter Voser, Chief Executive Officer, Royal Dutch Shell plc, at the Spruce Meadows Economic Round Table in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on September 11, 2009. We’re at the beginning of a fundamental shift in our energy system, one that also requires a fundamental shift in our collective mindset. But the energy transition is not for the faint-hearted; it will take decades of reversing set-backs, involving generations of committed scientists, engineers and policy makers. Adding to the scale of the challenge, we will have to increase energy supplies to meet growing demand. In this speech, Royal Dutch Shell’s CEO, Peter Voser, focuses on what government and industry can do to maintain energy security while building a new energy system. We need to diversify the global energy mix, without dismissing any energy option out of hand. To promote large-scale deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage and other low-carbon technologies, governments need to put the right policy frameworks and incentives in place. The UN climate conference in Copenhagen in December offers a good opportunity to make progress. |

Jeroen van der Veer 22-Jun-2009
Chief Executive, Shell Oil, Jeroen van der Veer writes in an Opinion Editorial about the energy future. The British newspaper The Times published the article on Saturday, June 20.
We stand at the early dawn of a new energy future. It will be powered by alternative energy and cleaner fossil fuels. If governments adopt the right rules and incentives, by the middle of this century renewable sources will provide nearly 30 per cent of the world’s energy. Society will be on the road toward sustainable mobility. The world’s highways will rumble and whir with vehicles powered by all manner of energy: petrol, diesel (yes, still there), electricity, biofuels, natural gas and hydrogen.
